Special education programs at Tamborine Mountain State School

Tamborine Mountain State School provides Special Education Programs (SEP) to assist local children who have a variety of special learning needs. Currently, the programs support students diagnosed with a variety of Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD), Intellectual Impairment (II), Speech Language Impairment (SLI), Physical Impairment (PI), Vision Impairment (VI) and Hearing Impairment (HI). Visiting Specialist Teachers also attend the school providing enhanced program delivery to students. Teaching and student learning is based on a blend of inclusion and small group instruction, ensuring a planned and differentiated curriculum to meet the individual student’s needs.

As a beneficiary of support from the Tour de Tamborine in 2010, the Special Education Program Centre is now able to provide educational support to students in a newly renovated facility. While Special Education Programs have previously been available at the school, this renovated space provides a calm relaxing environment to support each child’s individual learning needs. In the future, staff of the Centre are looking at creating an additional multipurpose teaching and learning space focusing on the sensory needs of students. An outdoor play area for small group play and gross motor activities is also planned.

The acquisition of a specifically designated space ensures that staff can provide a supportive learning environment catering for the diverse learning needs of each student.

Tamborine Mountain Landcare

Tamborine Mountain Landcare volunteers have been restoring rainforest corridors throughout Tamborine Mountain for over ten years, clearing hectares of weeds, planting thousands of carefully selected local plant species and nurturing the new sections to maturity.

The funds from this year's Tour de Tamborine event will be used to implement programmes which support junior and family Landcare activities. These include: consolidation of educational units for environmental studies - a project developed by TM Landcare's educational subcommittee; school participation with activities which promote understanding of our natural environment; activites and projects to include children, teenagers and families; and consolidating such projects as digital mapping, biodiversity data management and surface water quality testing.

Tamborine Mountain Defensive Driving Initiative

Headed up by TM's Queensland Police Service, this organisation encourages young people to develop wider skills and capabilities seen as important for safe driving. In Queensland there is a need to consider the special circumstances of rural youth, none more so than on Tamborine Mountain. Government can't deliver road safety on its own. The community must practise and participate to improve road safety.
